The Dream Is So Near
I have managed to attain my highest rating to far - 1782. I know, I know, Im not supposed to agonize over my rating, but it has become somewhat akin to a "pet". I have to feed it rating points so it becomes big and strong. I can't stop fussing over it, and grooming it, and thinking about it, and no! you cant take my rating away from me.. no, no, no!

Well ,anyway - Here is a summary of my last ten games, arrainged by opponents elo:

There is a couple of sub-1600 here, but they challenged me, and If they have a chess death wish, Nezha "The Terminator" is more than happy to give it to them - Arrr!

    Here is a recent shirov game that I annotated. I didnt use the computer when anotating, so there arent a lot of variations. But, mostly I was looking for ideas and stuff when annotating games, so that is what you get here.

    This is Shabalov-Shirov on the 2005 Canadian Open

      You'll reach 1800 in no time. You're already playing at that level, your rating just doesn't know it yet (your perf. on those ten games was about 1870).

      The Shabalov-Shirov game was very good, first sensible positional moves that and then all of the sudden the hell brakes loose. Shabalov & Shirov are some of the most tactical players today, it's amazing how deep they can see. You wouldn't be changing from Sicilian to French Defense?

      To Bahus:

      How do I calculate a performance rating?

      About the French:
      Though this is the hardest opening I play against as white (easiest is the sicilian - I score very well against it).
      The blocked pawn chains are not to my liking. Im trying to grasp how to use space and mobility so I dont think I will adopt this as black any time soon.

      The performance rating is calculated from your opponent's ratings.

      Say you play four games:

      + 1400
      + 1450
      = 1500
      - 1600

      Add 400 for each win, substract 400 for each loss and in case of draw take just the opponent's rating:

      1800+1850+1500+1200 = 6300
      6300/4 = 1575

      Another way to reach the same result is to take average rating of your opponents (here 1475) and the score of these three games (here 2.5/4 = 62.5%)

      Then use following formula:
      PR = 8 x (score - 50) + opp avg
      i.e.
      1575 = 8 x (62.5-50) + 1475

      PR is always within -/+ 400 points of your opponents and can't be calculated with perfect 100% score (if you win 1000 rated player ten times the PR is only 1400). There are all sorts of additions to these simple ways to calculate it but that's another story...

      Did you have a look at the Alapin-Diemer gambit against the French? I score 85% with it.
